Jacob’s Sons go to Egypt Gen 42, 43 (2 stories)
The famine was bad in all the lands. Jacob and his family were running out of food, so Jacob sent 10 of his sons to Egypt. He had heard that grain could be bought in Egypt. Benjamin stayed home. Jacob did not want anything to happen to Rachel’s son.
When Joseph saw his brothers, he treated them roughly and called them spies. He said that they had come to find the weaknesses in Egypt so they could conquer or destroy it. The brothers told Joseph about their family, but Joseph threw his brothers into prison for 3 days.
Why did Joseph treat his brothers like this? He wanted to find out whether they had changed.
Then Joseph let them take their grain and go home. To make sure tht they would come back, Joseph put Simeon in prison and told them that he would only be released if they would return with their youngest brother, Benjamin. Joseph also put their money/silver back into their sacks of grain.
When the brothers returned home and told Jacob what had happened, Jacob was very upset/ angry. Jacob told his sons that he would not let them take Benjamin back with them to Egypt. He said that he already lost Joseph and now Simeon was gone too. He did not want to lose Benjamin as well.
